Summer Time Adventure!

I love summer time, there always seem to be so much more going on. I love the warmth, swimming, people come into town, and most of all camping. Every summer my friends and I go on this amazing camping trip. It isn’t too far of a drive from our house, but it is pretty remote. You must hike or paddle your stuff in, and the nearest store is about an hour of an adventure (including paddling, hiking and driving). Because of this commute, we try to bring in everything we need. After many trips of camping, we started developing a very tight system.

One of the first things we do is have a continuing list. It all started on the back of a paper plate at a camping trip, we forgot a few simple things. Another time we forgot a spatula, so we made one out of a paper plate and some tongs, it worked okay, but it definitely went on the list.  Our lists became very large, but we  haven’t had a forgetful camping trip since, although enough beer still seems to be a problem. We also started doing the same thing for food, planning out every meal, making it easy to prep, cook and eat.

I hear a lot of reasons why people don’t go camping, they don’t like to get dirty, sleep on the ground or eat hot dogs every day. Well, I am hoping to help people out to having a little more fun while being in the outdoors.

Day 1: Breakfast: Pick up on our way out!

            Lunch: Sandwiches

            Dinner: Fish, rice, vegetables

Day 2: Breakfast: Banana, Croissant, Bacon, Scrambled Eggs

            Lunch: Pita pockets, Greek Filling

Dinner: Chicken Legs, Corn on the Cob, Mac and Cheese

Day 3: Breakfast: Bagel, Cream Cheese, Pear, and Hard Boil Egg

            Lunch: Sandwiches

Dinner: Hot Dogs, Potatoes, Fresh Veggies

Day 4: Breakfast: Blueberry Muffins, Grapes

            Snacks

Snacks: Chips, Salsa, Raw Veggies, Crackers, Trail Mix, Dried Fruit, Cookies and Red Vines.

Also, we like to bring blocks and cubes of ice, orange and other juices, coffee, and plenty of water.

When it comes to being prepared while camping food, it seems to help me prep before hand. It saves fuel as well as allows more time to fun. I usually make rice ahead of time and the Greek filling as well. I also put the chicken and BBQ sauce in a bag, and freeze it, that way you don’t have raw chicken, and it marinate as well. I also cut up the vegetables and put the proper spices, or just put the raw ones in a bag. I will also place the fish in a bag, marinate with seasonings, so it is already to be poured into foil and cook. I usually also make the muffins and cookies, that way it saves money and you get a ton. Having everything already to go makes camping that much easier, plus having a normal meal that you would eat at home makes it that much more enjoyable.

Dare to be adventurous. Every year I try something new, and have seen crazy things. I have seen a good friend make fresh oysters over the fire, attempted grilled cheese, as well as have been thinking about other culinary items for camping.

Off to go enjoy the sun, float in the water, and have some summer fun.
